Lincoln Elementary School in Edison is mourning the loss of one of its fifth-grade students.
Askari Moore was hit and killed by a car on Friday.
The 11-year-old was riding his skateboard a block away from his home in the Edison Woods complex when he was hit by the car.
His mother, Shakera Moore, says that she has been given little information by police, but witnesses say a woman without a license was driving in reverse, when she slammed through a fence surrounding a dumpster. They say the driver then hit Askari before crashing into a parked car.
A woman has been arrested, but Edison police have not yet announced charges.
"I moved here from New Brunswick to give him a better place to live, and it's unfortunate the place I found for him is the place that took his life," said Shakera Moore.
Grief counselors were made available for students and faculty Monday at the school.
