Manhole fire season is now in full swing as slush and salt coat New York City’s streets following a significant snowstorm.

The FDNY says it has responded to more than 100 incidents citywide in recent days. In Brooklyn alone, the FDNY responded to 98 manhole fire emergencies since Friday and 18 fires in that same time period in The Bronx.

No injuries have been reported.

According to Con Edison, the uptick in manhole fires is directly tied to winter road treatments. When salt mixes with melting snow, the brine can seep underground and corrode electrical equipment, including wiring. Over time, that corrosion can lead to overheating — and eventually, flare‑ups that send flames shooting from manhole covers.

A dramatic example unfolded in Flatbush on Saturday, where video captured flames erupting from a manhole in the middle of the street.

The FDNY urges New Yorkers to stay alert. If you see a manhole smoking or steaming, officials say you should report it immediately to the appropriate utility company.
