Authorities say one person was killed and two others were injured when the driver of a tractor-trailer cab struck a passing car during a police chase in Elizabeth.
The Union County Prosecutor's Office says the incident began just after midnight, when the driver of the tractor-trailer cab refused to stop for police on North Broad and Elizabeth avenues. Officials say the driver, who has been identified as Danny Clyde Burnam, continued onto Newark Avenue, crashing into at least eight parked vehicles along the road.
Police say Burnam then struck a car as it was turning into a supermarket parking lot. A passenger inside that car was killed and two others were injured. The occupants have not been identified.
Authorities say Burnam eventually crashed into the storefront of an electronics shop.
Police say officers opened fire on Burnam during the pursuit. He was struck and was hospitalized with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
Prosecutors say there is no indication that Burnam shot back at police officers. Earlier, News 12 had reported that witnesses said the driver exchanged gunfire with police.
It's unclear if Burnam is suspected of being under the influence during the pursuit.
