A small plane crashed into a wooded area behind homes in southern New Jersey on Saturday, leaving one person dead in the state's third fatal plane accident in less than a week.
The male pilot, the only person on board, was killed when the plane crashed in Waterford Township, Camden County spokesman Dan Keashen said. No one on the ground was hurt.
The Federal Aviation Administration was investigating the circumstances of how the Cessna 150 crashed.
Justin Wozniak said he was driving by the area when he saw the plane swerving in the air, then spiral to the ground.
"We saw a small little crop duster in the sky and we were just looking at it. We kept driving and it seemed a little weird. Not even a minute later, it just started spiraling toward the ground and just nosedived," he said.
Sean McMullen said that the plane crashed in the woods about 30 yards beyond the property line of a home belonging to his mother's neighbor. He said the wreckage of the plane appeared mangled and flattened.
A "neighbor said it was like a loud crash, she felt the ground shake. It was frightening for the people around here," he said.
Two other small planes have been involved in fatal crashes this week in New Jersey. A single-engine plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday, the same day another plane that had been missing since Tuesday was found in the northern part of the state.
