1 dead in crash at Point Pleasant Beach boat race
One person was killed when two boats collided Sunday during the Offshore Grand Prix boat races in Point Pleasant Beach.
Throttle man David Raabe, of Lacey Township, was identified as the racer killed in the crash. The driver, James Byrne, of Nutley, remained hospitalized Monday in critical condition. Both were on board the "Repeat Offender."
Racers on the water at the time of the crash told News 12 that in turn two of the course, Raabe's boat started to spin and was then run over by a second boat, "Smith Brothers." The boat went up in the air and landed on top of "Repeat Offender."
Emergency crews pulled Raabe out of the water and attempted CPR, but he did not survive.
It is not yet known what caused the accident.
The crash occurred during what was supposed to be the first of two races Sunday. The second race never happened, as racers decided not to participate out of respect for the boater who died.
