We are a week away from the kickoff to the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Year after year, stories pop up about fireworks mishaps, which can be prevented.

Ground sparkling devices, sparkling wheel devices, ground-based sparklers and various novelties are legal in New Jersey. Aerial consumer fireworks, however, are prohibited in the state.

News 12 spoke with Capt. Dan DiNuzzo with Edison Division of Fire about safety practices and potential risks for sparklers and smaller fireworks, as well as bigger, ground fireworks.

Sparklers are popular with all age groups - making the risks even greater. Last year, DiNuzzo said there were about 1,700 sparkler-related injuries that were treated in the ER. These sticks can burn up to 2,000 degrees.

Regardless of the fireworks used, DiNuzzo has the following universal advice: “Always use fireworks and sparking devices outdoors. Never want to use them inside or near any combustibles, including dry grass and leaves."

To purchase any legal fireworks in New Jersey, you must be at least 16 years old.

If you are not confident in your fireworks skills, DiNuzzo said don't take the risk. Instead, go to the nearest professional display that canoffer impressive aerial fireworks.
