Tristate airports saw some delays Tuesday morning due to wintry weather and technical issues on Christmas Eve. But the travel conditions seem to be stabilizing.

Traveling on Christmas Eve can either go well or be a headache. Things inside Newark Liberty National Airport’s Terminal A seemed to be going smoothly Tuesday evening.

AAA says air travel is up and traveling on the holiday could have benefits. Experts say the chances of finding crowds while traveling on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day are still likely, but it’s much quieter than it has been in the days leading up to the holiday. People filed into the terminal making their way to check-in counters.

AAA says the cost of domestic and international flights is up compared to last year. But traveling on the holiday could be good for your pocket.

“We’re traveling on Christmas Eve because the tickets were much cheaper today,” says Karina Jivotovsky, of Fort Lee. “We’re seeing a lot of friends. There are six couples and about 20 kids that are all coming together from all over America.”

More than 192,000 New Jerseyans are expected to fly to their holiday destinations. That’s an increase of 5.3% from last year.

American Airlines briefly grounded flights nationwide Tuesday because of a technical problem. Travelers are urged to arrive at the airport at least two hours ahead of their departure time and to check with their carriers on the status of their flights.
