Crews have been working in bitter cold conditions since late Sunday on a water main break affecting parts of Union County.
Customers were first notified just after 9 p.m. about the break near Morris Avenue and South Wood Avenue in Linden, according to American Water.
The affected area runs along Morris Avenue from Penn Place to Clinton Street, American Water said.
Officials said customers in the area may experience discolored or cloudy water, low water pressure or a complete loss of service.
The initial alert estimated repairs could take about six and a half hours, but crews and police remained on scene as work continued.
Even after repairs are completed, customers may continue to notice changes in their water, American Water said.
Single-digit temperatures in Linden have created additional challenges for crews. Wet road conditions around the work site may also cause slick spots.
