Warren County man arrested in death of 2-month-old daughter initially reported as chair fall

A 14-month investigation into the death of a 2-month-old infant has led to the arrest of her father.
James Capo Jr. was arrested Tuesday and charged in connection with the 2025 death of his infant daughter, Sophia Capo. He is being held at the Warren County Correctional Center pending his initial court appearance.
The investigation began April 17, 2025, when officers from the Lopatcong Police Department responded to a home in the 700 block of Youngs Road. First responders were called after reports of an unresponsive 2-month-old baby, with initial accounts saying the infant had fallen from a baby rocker.
Officers began CPR before emergency medical personnel took the baby to St. Luke’s Hospital-Warren Campus. Because of the severity of her condition, Sophia was later airlifted to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Sophia died a week later, on April 24, 2025.
A preliminary autopsy later contradicted the initial reports, concluding that the infant died from blunt force head injuries. The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide, prompting the lengthy investigation.
After a review by the Lopatcong Township Police Department and the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office, Capo Jr. was charged with first-degree homicide and second-degree endangering the welfare of a child.
In New Jersey, a conviction for first-degree homicide carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. Second-degree offenses carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in state prison.
