As you can see above, a pretty decent warm-up that will help melt all of this snow and ice is on the way very soon, Long Island and it doesn't stop with Thursday! Until then, it is critical to use extra caution when traveling tonight through Tuesday morning with more areas of black ice leading to slippery conditions, especially on untreated surfaces. There is also the chance for scattered flurries tonight, but nothing that would lead to any additional accumulation and most of the night is just very cold and dry.
REMINDER: Any ice on water is not thick enough for you to be standing or playing on yet. It will melt even more over the next few days. Below is an example of how thick ice must be to support your weight and the weight of vehicles.
A look at the pond at the Quogue Wildlife Refuge following this weekend's snowstorm. Reminder: stay off any ice on bodies of water. It is not thick enough to be standing on!
The wind is subsiding this evening, but it will still be breezy enough to make low temperatures in the 20s feel more like the teens still tonight and tomorrow morning. Dress in layers!
By Tuesday afternoon, it will still feel very cold, but not be as bad as it's been as high temperatures get a couple of degrees above freezing with lighter wind gusts.
Just to put something in perspective for you - Sunday's snow put us over the average for the month of December over the past 30 years. It also was the most December snow in five years on Long Island! Most of our Long Island snow typically falls in January and February. By the end of the week, most of it will be melted!
THE NEXT POSSIBLE STORM:
Late Thursday night through Friday morning continues to be our next storm chance. This time, it looks like heavy rain and strong wind. I would think ahead about planning on a slow-go, wet and windy Friday morning commute at this time. The afternoon is likely to be much drier. The News 12 Storm Watch Team will have better details on the impacts of Friday's weather for you over the next couple of days. Please check back for updates!
