Walmart is eliminating nearly 500 jobs at its corporate office in Hoboken, according to a notice recently filed with the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

The New Jersey Business and Industry Association says 481 jobs are being impacted. All of them are employees at the Hoboken offices – including the one on River Street.

A memo from Walmart was leaked last week, stating it was eliminating positions and asking employees in Hoboken to relocate to Walmart offices in Arkansas and California. The company says it wants Hoboken employees to work more closely with employees in those locations and continue to work in-person.

The North Carolina office is closing, according to the memo.

The memo came from Donna Morris, Walmart’s chief people officer. She said the changes are something the company has been discussing since last year as a way to increase collaboration, innovation and speed.

The 481 employees are expected to lose their jobs in Hoboken on June 13. The memo stated the company is working with those employees to provide relocation support or severance.
