For the second time since 2024, the borough of Waldwick is making plans to replace a Pride flag that was stolen shortly after being put up.

On June 1, Waldwick placed a rainbow flag on the fence near Route 17 to coincide with the state of Pride Month, just as officials have done in previous years. The flag was then stolen about two weeks later.

"It is with great disappointment that we report the flag was removed and stolen sometime last night," Mayor Tom Giordano said in a message to residents on Tuesday. "The Borough of Waldwick strongly condemns this act, which stands in direct opposition to our community's values. This behavior is unacceptable and does not reflect who we are as a community."

The borough's Pride flag was also stolen back in 2024. According to minutes from the June 11, 2024 Borough Council meeting, the mayor said that the Pride flag was removed the day after it was put up. Police put up a new flag while police investigated the theft. In the days that followed, a new flag was placed on the bench outside Borough Hall.

This time, police have also launched an investigation and once again, the borough is planning to put up a new Pride flag. The mayor is also asking whoever took the flag to return it and place it on the same bench where the flag was placed two years ago after being taken.

"To whoever is responsible — this is not the Waldwick we know, and your actions are a disservice to our neighbors and residents," the mayor said. "Our Police Department has opened an investigation into this matter. In the meantime, I urge whoever is responsible to return the flag to the bench outside the Administration Building no later than Friday night."
