An exclusive video obtained by News 12 New Jersey may be crucial to state investigators trying to piece together a possible attempt on a corrections officer?s life.
The incident occurred near the home of Officer Eugene Braswell on Grand Avenue Tuesday night. The security video captures the moment the suspect, 35-year-old Wali Williams, of Newark, appears to pull out a gun and fire at Braswell. Braswell was hit in the foot, but managed to return fire, killing Williams.
Williams had a long criminal record and did time at Northern State Prison for kidnapping, sexual assault, weapons possession and drug dealing. Records show Braswell has worked at that same prison for the past 10 years. A source familiar with the investigation said it appears the shooting was an act of retaliation, even though Braswell does not remember Williams.
The gun allegedly used by Williams was recovered at the scene.
