Veterans honored with tribute 5K and street fair in Springfield
Hundreds of people are paying tribute to our nation's heroes Sunday by lacing up their sneakers and hitting the road.
Springfield is celebrating Patriot's Day with a street fair and 5K race, which about 300 runners have signed up for.
The New Jersey Veterans Network founded the event and thought it would be great to tie in the 5K race to the festivities.
Michael Boll, of the New Jersey Veterans Network, says that 21 veterans commit suicide every day and that number has not changed over the years.
"We are here to bring awareness and also honor our veterans here today to show that we care and love each and every one of our veterans," Boll says.
Following the race, 21 veterans, one from each municipality in Union County, will be honored at a special ceremony.
The street fair will be going on until 5 p.m.
