The search is on for a suspect accused of shooting a New York State Trooper on a Long Island highway late Wednesday night.

Officials say that the vehicle the suspect was driving had temporary New Jersey plates.

Officials say that it happened around 11:45 p.m. on the Southern State Parkway in West Hempstead, New York. They say the trooper stopped to help who he thought was a stranded driver.

New York State Police say that the driver then opened fire on the trooper, striking him in the right leg. They say the trooper did not have a chance to return fire before the suspect sped away.

The suspect is believed to be a dark-skinned male. He was seen driving a black sedan that was possibly a Dodge Charger. The temporary New Jersey plate number is 997636T. The vehicle had custom exhaust tips and tinted rear-view windows.

The trooper is said to be in stable condition.

The suspect is considered armed and dangerous. Anyone who may have information is urged to call New York State Police at 631-756-3300.
