The United State Golf Association has announced that the 120th U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck has been rescheduled until September, while this year’s British Open has been canceled.
The championship, which was scheduled to be held June 18-21, will now be played from Sept. 17-20.
The USGA says tickets already purchased will be honored on the new dates. Refunds are available for anyone who cannot make the event.
Any players who have paid and registered for qualifying have already been issued a full refund for their entry. Once updated qualifying sites and dates are announced, those players will need to re-apply for the championship.?
Fully exempt players who have registered for the U.S. Open Championship will remain registered. Those who do not wish to compete on the new dates can request a full refund by emailing?champs@usga.org.
In Britain, the R&A has decided to cancel The British Open in 2020 due to the pandemic. This is the first time since World War II that golf’s original Championship, first played in 1860, has been canceled.
“I can assure everyone that we have explored every option for playing The Open this year but it is not going to be possible,” says R&A CEO Martin Slumbers.
Officials say the 149th British Open will be played at Royal St George’s from July 15-18, 2021 and The 150th British Open will be played at St Andrews from July 14-17, 2022.
Like the USGA, the R&A will transfer over tickets purchased in 2020 to 2021. Refunds are also available.
