A man was ordered to pay $20,638 for making threats on a United Airlines flight to Newark and causing the plane to be diverted, the Transportation Security Administration announced Monday.

The incident happened on March 1 on a plane coming from London. Authorities say a 30-year-old British citizen, Alexander MacDonald, caused a disturbance.

The TSA says a flight attendant tried to calm MacDonald, who became belligerent and intimidating, saying he would “mess up the plane.”

MacDonald was restrained in handcuffs and later arrested. The flight was diverted to Bangor, Maine.

MacDonald pleaded guilty on March 22.
