News 12's Tara Rosenblum continues her ongoing series "Under the Gun" with new data showing a growing racial divide in how gun violence impacts young people across the tri-state.
Federal data from the CDC shows nearly 800 children and teens were killed by gunfire between 2018 and 2023 in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
The nonprofit newsroom The Trace found young Black residents had the highest homicide rate at 6.2 per 100,000, while nearly 80 percent of youth suicides involved White teens.
The data also showed 87% of youth gun deaths involved males, with counties like Camden and the Bronx reporting the highest rates.
Several thousand shootings over the past decade occurred within 500 yards of K-12 schools, according to The Trace.
The group calls this a public health crisis and says solutions require investment in community safety, mental health and youth intervention programs.
