A loaded gun was intercepted at a security checkpoint at Newark Liberty International Airport inside a New York man’s carry-on bag, according to Transportation Security Administration officials.
The man was set to fly to France and was leaving out of Terminal B on Tuesday, according to officials.
“Carrying a gun into an airport checkpoint introduces risks to everyone in the area. Responsible owners of firearms know where their guns are at all times, and they know not to bring them to airport checkpoints,” Thomas Carter, TSA’s federal security director for New Jersey, wrote in a statement.
The federal penalty for bringing a weapon through a TSA checkpoint can be up to $15,000.
This is the 12th gun confiscated at Newark Liberty so far this year. This is down from 20 in 2023, but up from 11 in 2020.
