Trenton imposes emergency business curfew following weekend violence

Mayor W. Reed Gusciora has issued an executive order establishing an emergency weekend curfew for businesses along a stretch of East State Street following a surge in late-night violence.
Under Executive Order 26-001, all businesses located on East State Street between West Canal and South Broad streets must cease operations each evening between 10:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. The emergency order takes effect Friday, Aug. 7, 2026, running through Monday morning each weekend until further notice.
Mayor Gusciora cited recent violence during late-night hours as the driving factor behind the decision, calling the order a necessary step to protect residents and preserve public safety.
The business curfew is part of a broader push by city officials to restore order in the area. Additional measures include an increased police presence and stricter parking enforcement near City Hall during overnight hours, enhanced anti-dumping and cleanup operations, and amendments to local city ordinances to grant law enforcement stronger legal tools to curb disruptive behavior.
City officials say they will assess conditions on a daily basis, urging local shop owners and business operators to fully comply with the temporary restrictions.
