The city of Newark lit a holiday tree and unveiled a "Winter Village" as holiday festivities got underway on Saturday.
The Newark Downtown District hosted its 10th annual holiday tree lighting event at Prudential Plaza that featured ice skating, dancing, food trucks, hot cocoa and small business vendors.
The city installed in the "Winter Village" a Christmas market-style pop-up and a skating rink.
Organizers said holiday festivities have become a special tradition in the city.
"They don't have to go to Rockefeller Center. We have an amazing place," said Newark Ice Skating Manager Obalaji Baraka.
The "Winter Village" in addition to two ice rinks that were unveiled will be open all season.
