The Totowa police officer who was involved in the fatal shooting of a former Totowa cop was released from the hospital Tuesday.
Officer John Sole was shot in the shoulder by former Totowa police officer Peter Riva, 60. According to authorities, Riva ran over his ex-girlfriend and her male companion as they left the municipal courthouse. Investigators say Riva?s ex-girlfriend had just testified against him regarding a car accident.
Riva fled but was eventually cornered by police. Police say Sole returned fire after being hit, leaving Riva fatally wounded. Riva died Monday night at Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center.
Meanwhile, retired police captain Philip Bevacqua heard the commotion outside his home and ran to help Sole. Bevacqua said he pried Riva away from Sole before Riva was killed.
Both of the hit-and-run victims are expected to recover.
