The Toll of Commuting has grown more expensive for a method of transit that many say they take to avoid the pitfalls of others.
Seastreak ferries announced rate hikes earlier this month for most New Jersey to New York service.
It raised bulk fares from New Jersey to New York an average of 3%, but one-day, round-trip tickets rose 18%, from $49 to $58. Trips from Belford did not increase in price.
“It's definitely annoying,” said Marco, of Holmdel. “But, I get it. Everything’s getting more expensive.”
“Nobody likes a price hike either way,” said Jennifer, of Atlantic Highlands. “I guess they do have bills they have to pay.”
The ferry can bring up to 600 people from Atlantic Highlands to Wall Street in about an hour. Seastreak cited rising labor, maintenance and equipment costs, and said these hikes won’t fully cover the expenses.
Most commuters that News 12 spoke with said they buy in bulk. A 40-trip bundle is now $745. It was the first price increase since October 2022
“I think they do a good job of spreading the price hikes out,” said Brian, of Rumson. “You know it's coming.”
Commuters cited comfort, speed and luxury for the reasons they take Seastreak ferries into the city.
A full year’s worth of 40-trip passes has become $175 more expensive, but for hundreds of daily commuters, it’s a toll worth paying.
