News 12’s Toll of Commuting staff is looking back at a year worth of stories that that spotlight what New Jersey commuters face each day.

Amanda Eustice and Tom Krosnowski say what stands out most is how much planning and patience commuting requires, with people starting their days before sunrise and managing tight connections with little room for error.

Eustice says riders often underestimate the hidden costs of travel, including parking fees, transit cards, missed connections and delays that can double commute times.

Krosnowski adds that the ride-alongs gives them a deeper respect for commuters and how one delay can upend an entire day while emphasizing the need for reliable and affordable transportation
