Today in Wayne -- Black Balloon Day brings about awareness to overdose deaths
Today is Black Balloon Day, and if you notice black balloons around Wayne, it’s meant to bring about awareness to overdose deaths.
Susan Schmidt lost her daughter, Alyssa, to opioid addiction several years ago.
Alyssa was just 20 years old then.
Schmidt is hanging up the balloons for her and other people who've lost a loved one to the epidemic.
Schmidt is hanging them on trees at town hall and along Valley Road.
She wants others to know they're not alone when it comes to the opioid epidemic.
Schmidt also wants to reinforce just how urgent it is.
She recently attended her cousin's funeral, losing that cousin to an overdose.
Her daughter is at the forefront of her mind as she hangs up each and every balloon.
"I loved my daughter dearly and I brought star balloons because each one of our children are stars," says Schmidt.
Black Balloon Day is observed not just across the country, but internationally as well.
