A police-involved shooting investigation is underway in Newark. Three people were killed, including the suspect and an 8-year-old boy.
Law enforcement officials say that this suspect, who has not yet been identified, opened fire inside a home on the 300 block of Johnson Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, killing an adult man and an 8-year-old boy. A third person was also shot inside the home and survived.
Mayor Ras Baraka said that the people shot were not the intended targets, but that the people involved knew each other.
Baraka says that police officers found the shooter running away from the scene, chased him and then fatally shot him.
"Weapons were found at the scene. Three weapons were found. Based on ballistic evidence that we have, it can be associated that these weapons were used in other crimes in the city," the Baraka said.
The mayor also said that some police officers sustained minor injuries during the pursuit but were expected to be OK.
Baraka said that the city has to work harder to come together to deal with issues surrounding mental health, drug abuse, anger and conflict.
