Authorities are searching for the suspects involved in a shooting in Newark over the weekend that claimed the lives of two people – including a child – and injured three others.
"We are coming. There is no hiding. There is no running,” says Essex County Sheriff Amir Jones. “Turn yourselves in before we come knocking on your door, and trust me, you know the door won't slow us down."
The shooting happened around 7 p.m. Saturday near Chancellor Avenue and Leslie Street.
Officials say 10-year-old Jordan Garcia and 21-year-old Kia Mae Scott were killed in the shooting. Garcia’s 11-year-old brother and a 60-year-old man were injured and are in stable condition. A 19-year-old was listed in critical condition.
"There's a lot more work to be done. Too many guns on the streets. Folks have too much access to guns in our communities. And we absolutely have to do something,” says Newark Mayor Ras Baraka.
Newark Public Schools announced grief counseling will be available for students and staff.
"We mourn the loss of one of our students and the woman who was killed, and we continue to pray for the recovery of those who were wounded, which includes another one of our students," said Roger León, superintendent.
The Essex County Sheriff's office is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to a conviction.
Officials are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Tips Line at 1-877-TIPS-4EC or 1-877-847-7432. All calls will remain confidential, according to officials.
