Residents and business owners in a Newark neighborhood say they are shaken after a shooting left two people dead and three others injured Saturday evening.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office says the shooting happened just after 7 p.m. near Chancellor Avenue and Leslie Street. A 10-year-old boy and a 21-year-old woman died at University Hospital. Three others remain in stable condition.

People who live and work in the area said they immediately heard the chaos.

“Everybody was running for their life,” said Emily, who owns a nearby hair salon that was hit by gunfire. “We don’t know who was outside there with the gun.”

Some described dropping to the ground as shots rang out. Others said the aftermath was difficult to witness, including injured victims lying on the ground.

“There was one that was bleeding from the stomach,” said Manuel Fencion, who works at a nearby supermarket.

Some told News 12 the violence has left them scared and questioning their safety. Business owners said they are considering whether they can continue operating in the area.

Officials have not released information about a motive or any suspects.
