New Jersey?s waters are cleaner thanks to environmental initiatives, but the clear water is attracting unwanted pests.

New York and New Jersey Harbor Baykeeper Andrew Willmer says shipworms, which are also called marine boorers, are the termites of the sea. They are eating away at wood pilings at hundreds of marinas in places like Keyport. The damage has led to costly repairs.

Willmer says the shipworms were not a problem 20 years ago, but measures like the Clean Water Act have led to cleaner shores. Willmer says the shipworms stayed away when the water was dirtier.
