Thousands of bottles of hand sanitizer and packs of antibacterial wipes and medical masks have been donated after a failed attempt by two Tennessee brothers to resell them for profit.

News outlets report boxes were taken Sunday from a storage unit at the home of Matt Colvin, of Hixson, Tennessee.

"With businesses, there are wins and there are losses, and this is one where cutting my losses is the right thing to do," says Colvin.

The items were donated to a local church, with some supplies heading to Kentucky where Colvin had cleared store shelves during the U.S. coronavirus outbreak.

The brothers estimated they drove 1,300 miles over three days filling a truck they rented with the sanitizer.

Colvin and his brother went state to state clearing out sanitizer shelves following the first coronavirus death in the country. They got 18,000 bottles. Their plan was to sell them on Amazon to make a profit, some as high as $70 each.

But Amazon stopped their sales and the state attorney general sent a cease-and-desist letter.
