Two teenage girls are recovering from a botched escape attempt after getting caught drinking.
According to police, 14-year-old Shenay Spencer and a friend were caught with alcohol Wednesday evening. Rather than face being disciplined by a parent, the girls tied bed sheets together and attempted to climb down the makeshift rope to freedom.
Police say the girls slipped during their descent and fell to the pavement. Spencer suffered a broken jaw, broken leg and lost several teeth from the fall. The other girl broke her leg and pelvis.
Tiana Spencer, Shenay's mother, says her daughter is a chronic runaway with drug and alcohol problems. Spencer says she has attempted to get the girl help, but her pleas to the city of Newark, police and Division of Youth and Family Services went unheard until the accident.
"Nobody helps?now everyone wants to - it's too late," said Spencer.
The teenagers are out of surgery and expected to make a full recovery.
One mother is pointing the finger at the other, saying she bought the alcohol for both girls. However, residents say getting alcohol is relatively easy for underage people in Newark.
