An 18-year-old who was charged with punching and knocking out an elderly man on a street corner in Paterson has reached a plea deal.
Kristian Gonzalez, who was 17 years old at the time of the December 2015 attack, accepted a deal that would send him to a juvenile detention center for as long as three years.
Defense attorney Harley Breite spoke after the proceeding saying Gonzalez suffers from several mental disorders and was not properly medicated when the attack took place.
"Most importantly, he's properly treated now through doctors attention and proper medicine so as to prevent this from happening again," Breite said.
The attorney also claimed that his client had nothing to do with the videotaping of the assault.
Gonzalez is expected to be sentenced on Sept. 30.
