The man accused of being the ?Mad Hatter? bank robber shocked the courtroom Wednesday when he decided to back out of an agreement to plead guilty.
James Madison had signed an agreement to plead guilty to six counts of robbery. Madison is suspected of robbing 18 banks across New Jersey since last September. Police say he wore a different hat in each robbery.
Madison was arrested in July and charged with one count of robbery.
?Following his arrest, we charged him with a criminal complaint and indicted him on one count. That indictment stands at this point,? said U.S. Attorney spokesman Mike Drewniak. ?And as you heard the judge say, and I can confirm, we?ll now go back to a grand jury and seek to indict him.?
The judge set Oct. 1 as a trial date, but said if further charges are brought, that date could change.
