The town of Summit is taking major steps to keep pedestrians safe.
City officials have rolled out a campaign called "Heads up, phone down."
At several busy intersections, the city added large flashing pedestrian signs.
Pedestrians can click the large buttons on the signs before walking across the street.
They light up and tell the drivers to watch out.
City officials also plan to install speed humps on several busy roads where speeding has been an issue.
Crews also narrowed some of the major trouble spots, further slowing traffic and warning drivers to be on alert.
Some drivers say they are on high alert for distracted walkers.
“It’s kind of very chaotic and you just have to be careful, ride your brakes but these new stops … crosswalks will do that for you,” says Nathan Rtishchev, of Berkeley Heights.
It's been quite a few years since someone walking was killed by a vehicle in Summit.
City police hope the measures extend the streak for many more years.
