3ds agoA new study has found that medications for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder can impact a person's heart.
This includes Ritalin, Adderal and Vyvanse.
Researchers in Sweden studied the medical records of more 270,000 people, ages 6 to 64, and found that long term use of these drugs can increase one's risk of cardiovascular disease by 23%.
The data proved there is a link between taking ADHD medications for more than five years and developing high blood pressure and narrowing of the arteries.
ADHD medications are stimulants, which are known to elevate blood pressure.
Doctors urge those taking the medications to speak with medical professionals to see if they should continue.
Doctors say up to 10% of young people in the tri-state have ADHD and more than 41% of them take medication for it.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 6 million young people between ages 3-17 have ADHD and 35-78% of them continue to experience ADHD symptoms as adults.
