Students' right to privacy on school grounds was argued Monday before the New Jersey Supreme Court after an Egg Harbor Township principal checked a student's car for illegal drugs.
The lower court ruled students' cars that are on school property can be searched, just like lockers and book bags, in the interest of student safety. The attorney for the student who appealed the ruling says school administrators should follow the same protocol as police officers.
The principal accused of searching the student's car says another student told him he purchased drugs from the plaintiff.
The Supreme Court is expected to come to a ruling within the next few months.
