The son of a federal judge who was killed during a shooting at their North Brunswick home was remembered by the teammates of his former high school baseball team.
Even though he graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Metuchen a few years ago, 20-year-old Dan Anderl was still very much a part of the high school family. They say his death Sunday evening was shocking, and he is being remembered as a teammate whose positive attitude was contagious.
“I think it’s super important to keep his memory alive, especially for some of the younger guys in the program. To understand Dan embodies what we’re all about,” says former teammate Sebastian Mueller.
The St. Joe’s team paid tribute to Anderl at their game Tuesday night.
“He has a beautiful mind, like something you can’t really teach to anybody. Like, even if you talk to him, you might have to Google something because you didn’t understand the words he was talking about,” says former pitching coach Tom Hennessy.
Hennessy says that he and Anderl went golfing last month. He says that he regrets that they did not get to take a picture that day.
“I love Danny. He’s still one of my favorite kids. It’s sad… I can’t sleep for the past two nights thinking about it,” Hennessy says.
And he is not alone. Many of the players who knew Anderl says that they will miss him.
“He’s one of those guys that makes the team chemistry infinitely better because he’s everybody’s friend,” says former teammate Adam Boucher.
The FBI says that Anderl was shot and killed by Roy Den Hollander, a self-described “anti-feminist” attorney who apparently dressed up as a FedEx driver and shot Anderl and his father, Mark. The father survived. Anderl’s mother is Judge Esther Salas.
A motive for the shooting has not yet been released.
