It was a second day of long lines outside of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission offices, which reopened on Tuesday following COVID-19 closures.
Between 400 and 500 people were on the line at sunrise outside of the office in Freehold. Many young people camped out overnight, hoping to get their first driver’s license.
“It’s pretty annoying because all I needed was the license to drive. I have a car, I just can’t go anywhere because no one is thinking ahead of what’s going on. No one’s organized and they’re all over the place. I’m annoyed,” said David Policastro.

Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden activated the emergency response units once mid-morning temperatures became too high, and there was worry that people would overheat while waiting.
“They’ll be out there again with some coolers, some water and some shade and hopefully we don’t have anybody that needs EMS,” Golden said.
The cold water provided some relief to the warm weather, but did little to calm the frustrations of people who were stuck in line for hours.
“I was here last night at like 10:15 and I stayed for the night and they’re still here. The line is like quadrupled inside. I’m surprised,” said Chris Zita.
Zita says that he stayed up all night in line while his friends slept.
Some agencies like the location in Lakewood had to cut off the line for the day before the doors opened at 8 a.m.
MVC head Sue Fulton did not want to comment on today’s situation.
Gov. Phil Murphy said that his administration is working to alleviate the overflow crowding at the facilities. He says that furloughed MVC employees will be brought back to work and that centers will be open six days a week starting on Monday.
