A storm system off the coast of the Carolinas made for a windy, miserable day at the Jersey Shore.
Red Flag warnings were posted at many New Jersey beaches due to dangerous rip currents and beach erosion.
New Jerseyans who wished to get some beach time in before the end of summer say that they were disappointed by the poor weather.
“It stinks that we can’t go on the beach,” said Jacklyn Vallier.
The strong waves turned the newly replenished Ortley Beach beaches into cliffs. Waves were reported to be 7-10 feet tall. Earlier in the summer, a similar erosion event took the sand in Ortley Beach and dropped it off north in Lavallette.
Winds gusted to around 30 mph at Jenkinson’s Boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach. Large swells were spotted along the coastline.
Waves broke in areas that they shouldn’t have at the Manasquan Inlet thanks to the continued compromised beachhead wall on the Point Pleasant Beach side of the wall. The wall was badly damaged earlier this year after a nor’easter.
The mayor of Point Pleasant beach says that repairs to the wall may not come until at least October.
The wind and rain are expected to last into Tuesday evening.
The storm system, which was once thought to become Tropical Storm Irma, is expected to move out into the ocean soon. Weather conditions are expected to be improved for Wednesday.
