Two New Jersey state troopers rescued a dog from the Arthur Kill in Elizabeth on Saturday.
State police say that troopers Michael Buchell and Shane McClaffery were called for a report of a distressed dog in the water near the Elizabeth Marina.
Police say that the troopers saw the small dog, believed to be about 1 year old, struggling against the tidal current.
The troopers were able to rescue the dog and bring him aboard their boat.
“The dog showed signs of fatigue and early-stage hypothermia, prompting the troopers to administer immediate care, including drying and warming the animal,” officials wrote in a statement.
The dog was named “Oscar the Grouch” and was taken to the Carteret Station.
Officials say the dog is in good health and that Buchell is taking care of Oscar until his owners are found.
Anyone who may know who the dog belongs to is urged to call Friends of Elizabeth Animal Shelter at 908-820-4242 or 732-413-5006.
