Crews in Paterson may be working for up to a week to replace 50 to 60 feet of pipe after a major water main break.

The Passaic Valley Water Commission says the 42-inch transmission main broke Saturday at North 1st and Arch streets, cutting service to tens of thousands of customers.

Water was restored to the Riverside section and Fair Lawn, but both remain under a boil water advisory pending NJDEP test results.

Councilman Michael Jackson says the break is larger than the one behind Hinchliffe Stadium earlier this month, which also triggered widespread advisories.

Flushing of the system—paused due to this latest break—is expected to resume on Wednesday.

Officials say the state may provide up to $3 million to replace the pipe, two valves and a storm sewer – all over 100 years old.
