A fallen New Jersey police officer was honored decades after his death.

A monument was unveiled Monday for former Rahway Police Officer Charles Bernoskie.

It sits outside the New Jersey Police Benevolent Association building in Woodbridge.

Bernoskie attempted to stop a robbery at a local car dealership on Thanksgiving weekend in 1958 when he was shot three times. He left behind a pregnant wife and five children.

It took 40 years to find the people responsible. The NJPBA helped support the family through the years.

“It was a long process before anyone was ever charged and the case and verdict justice, but in her hour of need, the PBA stepped up and they were there for us,” Charles Bernoskie Jr.

Bernoskie’s wife never remarried, put herself through nursing school and raised the six children on her own. She now has 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

PBA members say the memorial represents the organization’s commitment to never stop fighting for fallen officers and their families.
