The North Jersey venue known as “The Last Great American Roadhouse” has closed its doors for the final time.
Ownership announced on Facebook earlier this week that the Stanhope House had closed and that tickets to upcoming shows would be refunded.
The venue’s future had been in the air in recent years. News 12 was told the building has been sold.
The building survived a large apartment redevelopment proposal last year that made it to the Town Council. It was voted down, 4-1.
The building dates to the 1790s and, according to the venue’s website, was said to be haunted.
The list of musicians who played at the Stanhope House in downtown Stanhope reads like a who’s who of blues legends: Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon and several more.
But the venue knew no limits. Ghostface Killah of the Wu-Tang Clan was a high-profile get from recent years.
It’s more than the past that is going away. The Stanhope House was involved in the local School of Rock, giving kids a chance to play to their first big crowd.
News 12 spoke with the young musicians who played the Stanhope House’s final show.
