John Santoro, 68, of Stamford, was on his motorcycle headed to a family member’s christening a couple miles away when he lost his life, according to Stamford police. Santoro was on Newfield Avenue just south of North Meadows Lane when police said he crossed into oncoming traffic for an unknown reason around 12:20 p.m. Sunday.

“We’re still trying to figure out why. He may have gone off the road on the right-hand side first, but he did cross over the double yellow line and struck a vehicle that was going northbound,” said Sgt. Jeffrey Booth, of the Stamford Police Department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad.

Booth said Santoro was thrown from the bike into a second car before he hit the ground. The first car, caught by a neighbor's Ring camera, never stopped.

“A white four-door sedan, possibly a Kia or a Honda or a Nissan—one of those brands—did leave the scene. We’re not sure why. Nobody spoke to the driver. The driver never got out of the car,” Booth explained.  

He said the driver of the second car stopped and tried to give Santoro medical aid, as did other people passing by, but Booth told News 12 his injuries were too serious. As investigators try to piece together why this happened, they’re hoping the public can lead them to the person who may know something.

“We want to talk to the driver of the car. That’s our biggest concern right now is finding out who was driving that vehicle,” Booth said. “We really want to find out what happened and why they left the scene.”
