A South Toms River K9 is awaiting emergency surgery after suffering a sudden medical emergency during a training exercise.

K9 Loki was training alongside his handler, Sgt. Kosh, in South Toms River when the medical emergency occurred.

Loki was immediately rushed to Garden State Veterinary Specialists in Toms River, where veterinary staff initially stabilized him. Recognizing the need for advanced care, handlers activated the K9 Kona Medevac Program to coordinate an emergency medical transport to Red Bank Veterinary Hospital.

Upon arriving in Red Bank, veterinary specialists evaluated Loki, further stabilized his condition, and prepared him for emergency surgery.

Police are asking the community to keep K9 Loki and the department’s K9 Unit in their thoughts. Officials said additional updates on Loki’s condition will be provided when appropriate.
