A volunteer firefighter who was struck and killed by a driver outside a Somerville firehouse was laid to rest today.
Friends, family and firefighters from across New Jersey gathered to pay their final respects to 75-year-old George Kavanaugh. He had been a volunteer member of the Lincoln Hose Company for 50 years. Services were held at the Immaculate Conception Church in Somerville.
Kavanaugh was hit and run over by a light-colored vehicle that backed out of the fire company's parking lot on Friday night, according to the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office. He died at a hospital.
Authorities say a witness said the vehicle had been idling and parked in the area of the front bay firehouse door between 9:15 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
A $2,500 reward is being offered for any information that leads to an arrest. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Somerset County Crime Stoppers Tips Line at 888-577-8477.
