A Cedar Grove family experienced some terrifying moments driving home this weekend after someone fired a BB gun into their rear car window -- seemingly on purpose, according to police.
Police say that this is not the first time people have been shot with BBs along Fairview Avenue.
Jason Sullivan's 3-year-old daughter Maizie was sitting in the window seat of the family’s Toyota Camry, and his 1-year-old Isla was right next to her when the shooting happened.
“My daughter, my 3-year-old’s head was right here and the bullet hole was right there. God forbid that went through the glass,” says Sullivan.
Sullivan’s wife Katy was driving the family along Fairview Avenue at around 9 a.m. Sunday when they heard a loud bang.
“I actually thought a big branch hit the roof of the car,” he says. “All of a sudden I hear screaming in the back seat and my 3-year-old is…covered in glass,” he says.
Neither child was hurt. The BB did not go through the glass, only shattered it. The glass is still out on the street.
Cedar Grove police are now trying to find out who shot the projectile. Cedar Grove Park is on one side of Fairview Avenue. On the other side is the newly constructed Hilltop Townhouses. The second story of the townhomes provides a direct sightline to the road.
"I can't think of anything else but those top-level windows. I just don't think someone would be out there in broad daylight popping off a round and running,” says Sullivan.
There have been other reports of another car being shot with a BB. Another resident tells News 12 New Jersey that a friend of hers was shot and injured while walking his dog along Fairview Avenue.
“He told me he had been shot…He told me that it was with a BB gun. He had an injury,” says Lisa Lisser. “I don’t really understand how with the investigation the cops couldn’t figure out which house it came from.”
Sullivan meanwhile says that he is scared for his children.
“I couldn’t sleep last night because I knew someone tried to hurt my kids,” he says.
Cedar Grove police tell News 12 that they are taking the matter seriously and that the Hilltop Townhouse complex is an area of interest within the investigation.
