More than 150 kids took over Pennington Park in the City of Paterson for the MLS GO soccer kickoff event.
MLS GO is Major League Soccer's grassroots recreational youth soccer program, designed to provide a fun, inclusive and supportive environment for kids to learn the game. It was held in conjunction with the Red Bulls and RCX Sports.
The event kicked off a partnership between the city and MLS GO to bring youth soccer to the city this fall, helping increase access and affordability of the game.
"This is a very diverse community that just has that passion for the game. A lot of the kids today were saying 'I just play, I don't have a team. I just play and we do pickups' so this is the perfect place to get started. The league is going to be the perfect place to build the skills," said Gloria Castaneda, the program manager of MLS GO.
Parents can sign their children up to play soccer this fall by contacting the Paterson Recreation Department.
