An infant is now safe after thieves stole a vehicle where the baby was left in the backseat.
The Essex County Sheriff says that a gold Mercedes Benz SUV was stolen from the 110 block of Clinton Avenue in Irvington just after 8 p.m. on Tuesday. The 3-month-old baby was still inside.
The vehicle and the baby were found about three hours later abandoned in Newark’s South Ward. The baby was awake and alert and was not hurt.
“This is an example of exemplary police work where multiple agencies worked in unison with a common goal. I am proud of the work done by all the officers involved, and I am grateful for the positive result,” Sheriff Armando Fontoura wrote in a statement.
Whoever stole the SUV is still on the loose.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office tips line at 1-877-TIPS-4EC or 1-877-847-7432.
