New Jersey has opened another mega-vaccination site – this one in Burlington County. The site opened on Friday at the Moorestown Mall. It is one of six megasites opened around the state in an effort to vaccinate millions of New Jersey residents.
But some senior citizens who showed up at the site on Monday in the hope of getting an appointment say that they are frustrated with the system.
“My significant other had no program getting through and she was signed up for something like the 15th of February. That sounded reasonable,” says Erik Burro, of Willingboro. “But then when I went on, maybe an hour later, I was able to fill out the form but nothing happened…I filled out the form three times and never got even an acknowledgment.”
Burro – like many others – showed up at the Moorestown site seeking answers. Herbert Diamond did the same.
“I just wanted to talk to a supervisor to see why each time we try to get through it’s like 40 minutes to try and get through on this and each time it gets further down the line,” Diamond says.
Gov. Phil Murphy announced last Thursday that state residents over 65 could start getting the vaccine. But many seniors tell News 12 New Jersey that going online to make those appointments is difficult for their generation. They say that they must rely on family members for help.
They also say that they have to wait for months for the vaccine.
“We’re set for April 19, 2021, which is a bit off in the distance,” says Diamond.
“Here we are, the older population, trying to follow up on the fact that we’re [phase] 1B or 1C. We are still waiting to know if we’re prioritized. Where is the priority?” asks Burro. “There’s too much mystery here and that’s a shame because some of us will be gone before it's available.”
Moorestown is the second of three megasites in southern New Jersey to open. No opening date has been set for the third location at the Atlantic City Convention Center.
